19 March 2020 by

On 17 March 2020, the AMPJP held a consultation regarding the committee it will establish for Religious Institute and Ministerial PJP School Authorities.

Participants in this consultation were:

  1. Moira Najdecki (AMPJP and GSE);
  2. Lawrie Hallinan (AMPJP);
  3. Sr Catherine Slattery sgs (RI and MPJP nominee on the NCEC and GSE);
  4. Anne Walker (CRA);
  5. Kitty Guerin (Federation of RI and MPJP Catholic School Authorities in NSW and ACT);
  6. Sr Julianna Drobik (DEA and Catholic Religious Institute and Ministerial Public Juridic Person Victorian Schools Ltd);
  7. Phil Billington (EREA); and
  8. Dr Frank Malloy (Marist Education Australia and Federation of RI and MPJP Catholic School Authorities in NSW and ACT).

Apologies were received from:

  • Christopher Houlihan (Mercy Education Ltd)
  • Paul Ould (Loreto Ministries)
  • Sr Philippa Murphy (Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart)
  • Jennie Hickey (Jesuit Education Australia)
  • Sr Mary-Louise Petro rsm (Sisters of Mercy, Parramatta) and
  • Sr Loreto Conroy RSM (Sisters of Mercy, North Sydney).

Anne Walker spoke about CRA’s experience of providing a RI and MPJP education committee. She explained that CRA’s restructure and the growth in AMPJP were the main reasons for inviting the AMPJP to provide a replacement committee for RI and MPJP School Authorities.

Lawrie Hallinan provided some data on the RI and MPJP school sector which he derived from My School website and from the 26 RI and MPJPs who have so far returned his survey on their schools. It was reported that RI and MPJP make up a significant part of the secondary school sector (this is not in the slides as Lawrie does not have statistics to verify this).

Sr Catherine Slattery sgs explained the role of the National Catholic Education Commission (NCEC). She spoke of her experience as the RI and MPJP nominee on NCEC. She provided insights into what she thinks a RI and MPJP nominee on NCEC needs from a RI and MPJP committee.

Moira Najdecki facilitated a discussion about the current draft of the Terms of Reference for the proposed AMPJP committee. A number of suggestions were made, including that the committee be named the: Committee Of Religious Institute and Ministerial Public Juridic Person School Authorities – Australia (CORMSAA).

Moira outlined further consultation and actions before the establishment of CORMSAA in July 2020.
