Laudato si’: a template for spirituality and justice

14 May 2020 by

Laudato si’ Week 16-24 May 2020 honours the fifth anniversary of Pope Francis’ encyclical On Care for Our Common Home.

This encyclical cannot be described or dismissed as being about the ‘environment’. Laudato si‘ presents a rich incarnational spirituality. Pope Francis invites us to hear and respond to God’s invitation to encounter God in prayer, creation, beauty, community, and the poor.

“The Spirit of life dwells in every living creature and calls us to enter into relationship with him” (Laudato si’, 88)

It is from this point of spiritual encounter that we find the awareness, desire and strength to work for justice for all of creation. A key concept in Laudato si’ is ‘integral ecology’ – all of creation is interconnected. Human development in one area cannot be at the expense of other people or the rest of creation.
