Pope Leo’s First Encyclical – Relevance for MPJPs: Exec. Director's Report August 2025

9 August 2025 by

The first encyclical of a pope is often seen as a manifesto, outlining their core vision and priorities for their pontificate.  It serves as an initial statement of their papal teachings and intentions, setting the tone for their papacy and guiding the faithful.

Pope Leo XIV is currently writing that first encyclical.

Fr Alejandro Moral Antón, a close friend of Pope Leo, hinted that the encyclical may touch on peace, social doctrine, unity, and even artificial intelligence.

Early insights suggest these and other themes could resonate deeply with Ministerial Public Juridic Persons (MPJPs) in New Zealand and Australia—especially in support of lay leadership, Catholic identity, and social mission:

  1. Social Doctrine and Catholic Identity
    • Reinforce the Church’s commitment to human dignity and the common good.
    • Provide theological grounding for health, education, social and aged care ministries.
    • Encourage ethical discernment around emerging technologies such as AI in care delivery.
  2. Lay Leadership and Synodality

Pope Leo’s early emphasis on “stepping aside to make room for Christ” suggests a humble, collaborative leadership style. If the encyclical likely affirms synodality:

    • MPJPs may find renewed support for inclusive governance models with prominent lay leadership.
    • Trustees could draw inspiration their continued personal development as lay leaders as we address our priorities for formation.
    • An understanding of Synodality will emerge over time which supports the role of Bishops, and at the same time allows a greater level of lay decision-making in collaboration with that governance role.
  3. Unity and Identity in a Pluralistic Society

Australia and New Zealand’s MPJPs often navigate complex cultural and religious landscapes. A papal call for unity and spiritual renewal could:

    • Help articulate a shared Catholic identity across ministries.
    • Offer language for bridging tradition and innovation in public witness.
    • Provide a language for expressing Catholic ethical views within a diverse cultural setting.
  4. Environmental and Ethical Stewardship

If Pope Leo builds on Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum, MPJPs might:

    • Reaffirm ecological sustainability as part of their mission.
    • Integrate creation care into strategic planning and formation programs.
