Season of Creation

September 1, 2022 - October 4, 2022

The Season of Creation begins September 1, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, and ends October 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of ecology. As this year’s Season of Creation nears, we provide a recap of how we’ve prepared to celebrate this meaningful occasion and look ahead at what’s to come.

What is the Season of Creation? It’s the annual Christian celebration of prayer and action for our common home. We listen and  respond to the cry of creation as one Christian community. *Read related blog

What’s happened so far in 2022

The Season of Creation symbol was launched in February, as leaders reflected on the need for all Christians to truly “Listen to the Voice of Creation,” the theme of the 2022 Season of Creation. God’s creation moans ever louder and suffers more every day amidst the ongoing climate emergency and biodiversity crisis. *Read related blog

With excitement, the countdown to live the Season of Creation 2022 began with a launch event that was broadcasted live in June. Representatives of different denominations encouraged reflection on this year’s theme, ”Listen to the Voice of Creation”, and the symbol of the “burning bush”.

In addition, this year’s Season of Creation Celebration Guide was presented, with practical indications to prepare for this ecumenical time, inviting Christian communities around the world to unite in action and prayer for creation. *Download this year’s Celebration Guide. *Read related blog

This July, in an unprecedented press conferencePope Francis’ message was released ahead of the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, which marks the beginning of the Season of Creation.

In his message, Pope Francis defines the Season of Creation as “an opportunity to cultivate our ‘ecological conversion’”, recalling this concept encouraged by St. John Paul II as a response to the ‘ecological catastrophe’ announced by St. Paul VI as early as 1970.

Looking Ahead

During August, we are in preparation to reach local leaders and call our communities to participate actively by raising awareness of the theme, and how to respond to the cry of

creation where the Lord calls us in our diverse contexts.

Through this process of preparation, community leaders collaborate to make this annual celebration increasingly well-known, mainstreaming creation care in the global Church in the Synod of Synodality journey.
