Today, the Presidents of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference and Catholic Religious Australia have said that they accept 98% of the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Furthermore, they have made a commitment that the Church’s shameful history of allowing the most vulnerable to be abused will never be repeated.
Archbishop Mark Coleridge and Sr Monica Cavanagh RSJ made these statements at a media conference on Friday 31st August 2018.
Their statements are based on the 57-page response of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference/Catholic Religious Australia to the Royal Commission’s recommendations ACBC_CRA_Response_to_the_Royal_Commission
They also issued a one-page media release The_Catholic_Church_has_learned_is_changing_and_will_keep_changing
In the media release, Archbishop Coleridge said the Catholic Church’s response to the Royal Commission’s recommendations is
“a plan of action; it is our pledge to the Australian people; it is our promise of transparency and accountability”.
