The Association of Ministerial PJPs (AMPJP) congratulates and thanks the Implementation Advisory Group and its Governance Review Project Team on the report: “The Light From The Southern Cross”.

Eva Skira AM, AMPJP Council Chair said:

The Light From The Southern Cross interim report is a significant achievement for the Implementation Advisory Group and its Governance Review Project have excelled in their commission to conduct a review of governance especially within dioceses and parishes as recommended by Australia’s Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (16.7). We can see that many within Australia and across the world will draw on the rich resources and practical suggestions in the report.

The Light From The Southern Cross” (pages 4-5) correctly notes: All Church authorities are, in the end, dependent and interdependent, and relationships are important. For this reason, this report has examined the nature of these relationships and how governance and management of all church Authorities can contribute to the well-being of the People of God in a holistic way.

The theological foundations and the principles and culture of good governance set out in the report apply to all parts of the Church. The AMPJP and its members recognised these as characteristics that they seek for their organisations. The AMPJP hope that these sections will be a great resource to those who seek to understand and open themselves to all that God would like to do in and through us.

AMPJP members are conscious of their governance role as coming as a right and a responsibility from their Baptism. The AMPJP applauds the reports encouragement that the wider Church engage, form and support more lay people in the governance and management of the Church.

AMPJP support the report’s strong emphasis on synodality as a process that will help the Church build the sense of co-responsibility that is needed among all the People of God.

Eva Skira AM, AMPJP Council Chair said:

Events in our COVID-19 world have shown us the profundity of the truisms ‘we are all in this together, we will only succeed if all fulfil their role’. This sense of everyone having a part to play and all depending on each other is also true of our Church. The synodal image of journeying together is so fitting for the Church in Australia as we navigate this ‘change of era’.
